In our pursuit of mission-driven leadership, it’s easy to focus on the big picture—the grand vision, the long-term goals, and even the legacy we want to leave. But the truth is, mission-driven success is built in the small, consistent actions we take every single day, and the diligence to persevere through the mundane.
As Oswald Chambers wrote in his famous devotional, My Utmost for His Highest, “We have to be exceptional in the ordinary things.”
At Icelaven, we strive to be intentional in the details. At our schools, for example, our teachers work to understand a student’s unique learning style to give that student the confidence to thrive. Another example: we evaluate potential investments through the lens of our Core Values. And finally, in the detailed conversations that may not seem worthwhile, we strive to truly listen, understand, and collaborate to create meaningful solutions.
Said differently, staying on mission isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about showing up—imperfectly, but with purpose—and committing to move the needle every day. That’s crucial because, when we look back, it’s often those small, seemingly insignificant actions we took that made the biggest difference.
This perspective doesn’t just apply to business; it applies to life. If we’re striving to make an impact in our family, our church, or in civic work, the same principles apply. Progress rarely comes from one dramatic leap. More often, it comes through diligence in the everyday stuff of life—like showing kindness to others, persevering through challenges, and resolving to try again after a setback.
Each day we must ask ourselves: What can I do today to advance our mission? Maybe it’s reaching out to a client to ask how we can better serve them. Maybe it’s revisiting our team’s Core Values to ensure they’re guiding our crucial decisions. Or maybe it’s as simple as giving ourselves the margin to pause, reflect, and refocus.
Big change not only starts small—it’s also the result of hundreds of ordinary steps that keep us focused on our mission each day.
How are you advancing your mission today?
