Kolbe Assessment Guide

The Kolbe A™ Index is a powerful tool designed to help individuals understand how they naturally take action. Unlike personality tests that focus on feelings or cognitive assessments that measure intelligence, Kolbe focuses on conative strengths—your instinctive way of solving problems and getting work done.

Kolbe helps teams improve clarity, communication, and collaboration by identifying how each person naturally operates under pressure, during change, and in day-to-day work. It supports better leadership decisions, stronger hiring practices, and more productive teamwork.

The foundation of Kolbe is built around the 3 C’s of Success: Clarity, Commitment, and Collaboration. Clarity means understanding your natural strengths. Commitment means using your mental energy productively. Collaboration means working effectively with others by understanding both your own instincts and theirs.

Kolbe separates the mind into three parts: Thinking (Cognitive), Feeling (Affective), and Doing (Conative). Thinking includes knowledge, education, and experience. Feeling includes motivation, values, and personality. Doing focuses on striving instincts—the natural methods you use to take action.

The Kolbe A Index measures these instincts through four Action Modes®: Fact Finder, Follow Thru, Quick Start, and Implementor.

Fact Finder shows how you gather and share information. People strong in this area thrive by researching details, asking questions, comparing options, and verifying accuracy before making decisions.

Follow Thru reflects how you organize and design. High Follow Thru individuals succeed by creating step-by-step plans, maintaining routines, preparing for risks, and building structure.

Quick Start measures how you handle risk and uncertainty. Those strong here work best by brainstorming new ideas, acting with urgency, experimenting, and focusing on innovation and future opportunities.

Implementor shows how you handle space and tangible solutions. Strong Implementors thrive when building practical solutions, working face-to-face, and solving visible, hands-on problems.

Some individuals fall into the Facilitator profile, where several scores sit in the middle range rather than showing one dominant strength. Facilitators often excel in flexibility, collaboration, and adapting to the needs of others.

Understanding your Kolbe results becomes especially valuable during times of change or uncertainty. When people trust their instincts instead of fighting them, they reduce stress, improve productivity, and make better decisions.

Kolbe is also highly effective for leadership development and team communication. Questions like “How do I do my best work?”, “What is the best way to communicate with me?”, and “What contribution could I give more of?” help teams create stronger trust and better alignment.

In EOS®, Kolbe is often used alongside the Accountability Chart, People Analyzer, and hiring process to ensure people are placed in the right seats where they can succeed naturally—not just where they look qualified on paper.

When teams understand how people think, feel, and most importantly, do, they build stronger trust, better execution, and healthier long-term growth.
